What Is Ear Stapling Acupuncture?

October 21, 2005

Filed under: Acupuncture Treatment General — Admin @ 10:27 am

Placing acupuncture needles in certain parts of the body is seem by some as a way to assist with weight loss because it is reported as providing the person receiving the acupuncture with a feeling of well-being which in turn stifles cravings for unnecessary food intake. Acupuncture has also been known to speed up the metabolic rate causing food to be used more efficiently by the body instead of just storing the food as fat.

So what is ear stapling acupuncture? Ear stapling acupuncture is an American concept often used as a form of weight control which is usually unsuccessful and with risk to the individuals health. In contrast to the normal acupuncture treatments which use anywhere from 10 to 20 or more points for the acupuncture needles ear stapling acupuncture only incorporates two points. There are risk issues with this acupuncture method because ear cartilage is unable to replace itself after being damaged and also only has a light ability for fighting infections. If ear staples are left in for quite a few days they have a greater chance of causing infection. Sometimes the ear acupuncture staples can fall out in to the ear canal opening up the possibility of them damaging the ear drum and other delicate inner ear areas. Cases have been reported where individuals who have undergone ear stapling acupuncture end up with lasting holes in upper areas of their ears caused by infected ear acupuncture staples with sloughing. Ear stapling acupuncture should be approached with due caution and is not recommended as a form of weight control.

Individuals looking to acupuncture for help with their weight reduction usually do so whilst already on a plan of sensible diet and exercise. Individuals going through a weight loss program can often become depressed and irritable which is where acupuncture can help. The acupuncture treatments administered can alleviate these feelings and help the individual sustain a positive outlook helping them improve will power and in the end aid them in completing or continuing their weight loss plan with great results.

I HAD MY EARS STAPLED 10 DAYS AGO, I HAVE LOST 5 PDS SO FAR. THERE IS A RISK OF INFECTION JUST LIKE ANY OTHER PROCEDURE. IF YOU FOLLOW YOUR AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKE SURE THE PERSON YOU ARE DEALING WITH IS NOT SOMEONE FROM THE STREET, THEN I THINK IT IS A REALLY WONDERFUL CHANCE AT WEIGHT HAPPINESS !! I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THE PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO DIRECTIONS WILL GET THE RESULTS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR……….

I had a very unusual side effect from having acupressure electronically. It felt like
a rush of adrenilyn. I did have a emergency shot of adrenelin once as a young adult
because of a ashma attact. I could not control it, it controled me. I went to the
grocery store right after and could not think. I left there and went straight to my f
freinds house and started bababling going from one subject to another, then I have a
huge long hard craving for a cigarette. That is what I went to get done. Smoking!
So I had one of my friends cigarette, and it affected my strangly. I felt that rush
again. My friend said, that my eyes looked glassy and ask me if I was all right.
I said that I didn’t feel very good and that the craving was so overwhelming I have
never experienced anything like it before. I ran into a web sight but can’t find it
now, that said that electroacupresser could be over done, and describle a simarlar
side affect. Have you ever heard of such a thing happening? Please help!

I am thinking of having this procedure but want to know the pros and cons - I also take synthroid for a thyroid condition….is this safe?

  7. Shelly Said,

Debbie, do you mean acupuncture treatment for appetite suppressant? If so, I did that about 30 years ago. Outside of being costly and painful, it wasn’t dangerous. Not very effective in my case though. I think it would have worked except it was more fun to eat a cookie than to tug on my ears! You could consider cornea-pinning, too.

If the synthroid is prescribed by a doctor it is safe. Do not take it if it isn’t prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Too much is worse than not enough.

As always, consult your doctor or GP before considering any medical or health related procedure.

I am a Certified Acupuncturist and I am finding this whole ‘ear stapling’ quest a bit disturbing. While I do agree that auricular acupuncture has it’s place, it is not the key answer to weight loss. I have even used it on myself and still had to pay attention to my eating habits. As a society, we are looking for the easy way out and it frustrates me when people will call me to ask about ear stapling and when I tell them that they still have to eat healthy and exercise, they get upset with me. I am told that they ’saw it on the internet’ or ‘in a magazine’ and therefore, it must be so! Weight loss is simple, calories in, calories out. No magic to it. That said, auricular acupuncture can facilitate weight loss by boosting the metabolism and curbing the appetite and cravings (I also use body points on my patients when treating weight loss), but the person must also be eating well and exercising, which by the way, we should be doing anyhow. Also, I don’t use staples because of the very real risk of infection. Instead I use ear seeds which are tiny, surgical steel seeds that sit on the points in the ear. While we do have to occasionally stimulate them by pressing on them, they carry no risk of infection and are very effective. I do encourage everyone to use acupuncture as a treatment for facilitating weight loss but caution against relying soley on it’s use. Eat well, move your body and you will be healthy.

I had ear staples done(I even work for a ear staple clinic in Ca.)They did work, I lost 12lbs. in 2 weeks and felt a huge endorphine rush the first 10 days but during the second week I became extemely exhausted and had “flu” like symptoms. My ears became very sore and inflammed and I had pain that radiated through my neck and jaw. I went to the doctor and she removed the staples, within 2 days I felt fine again and all my symptoms subsided. I liked losing the weight but not at that extereme, now I eat smarter and walk more often. Working in an ear stapling clinic, I see more clients that return with complications and find it hard to work doing something I don’t believe in.

I had my ears stapled about two months ago and it did help supress my appetite but now my ears are starting to look
lumpy and red. I will take them out and hopefully things will go back to normal.
    Anyone else experience this?

Ear stapling is not an approved acupuncture procedure, and is illegal in most states. Those that use stapling are not conscientious practitioners. Acupuncturists will use auricular therapy, but with extremely small needles or ear studs; the risk of stapling infections is extremely high, and the poor blood circulation to ear cartilage increases the infection risk. See a licensed acupuncturist and not a quack.

I had only my right ear stapled for about 2 yrs. It never once got infected and I really cant remember if i lost any weight but I do remember when I took it out maybe 6 mnths to a yr. after that I gained a tremendous amount of weight. I suggest it & think of it as a normal peircing you still have to look after it.

I own and have used WEIGHT LOSS EAR STAPLE IN BUFFALO NY. It was successful and have many clients that have had success too. It is a form of acupuncture I do not advertise it as acupuncture and there are 2 areas targeted. 1 for smoking, 1 for weight loss. I have not had an infection and love the effects. I have had it done a few times because I love the added benefits, sleep better, less back pain, better mood, less stress, not thinking about food in between meals. And I drink alot more water which also benefits weight loss. It is not the magic bullet and yes you need to make better, healthier food choices. Check out my web site http://www.weightlossearstapleofwny.com Good Luck
